The guy on the right of the picture got me started with the Porsche 911 marque - well not directly because as anyone will know this is Steve McQueen who is talking with Peter Revson at the Sebring 12 hours on 1970. Many motor racing followers will know that this man loved to race as much as act and it was the film he starred, Le Mans in 1971 that I got smitten by the Porsche 911.

As it was it wasn't until 2009 that I eventually took the plunge to buy my first 911 (964 series), why so long, well actually after seeing that film in 1971 I started saving for that car of my dreams and within two years had enough to purchase a second hand Porsche. However being the wise parent my Father advised me I could buy it but I wouldn't be able to run it, well I was still only 20 coming up to 21, goodness knows how much the insurance would have been? Well the picture above signifys the final step that after so many hours surfing on the internet, saying yes, no,maybe and knowing if I did the ongoing costs could seriously stress one out I eventually did the right thing I bought one!! One that I hoped was not going to rust away in front of me - hence the reason why the 911/964 - the 964 was a major step by the company in solving a great many problems body wise and mechanically, other than the weird accelerator pedal position on right hand drives. Be prepared not to drive a car such as this for more than two hours, hence why I call it my two hour car, any more than that you will have the most painful hip and leg ache that won't go away until some time after you get out of the seat!! In the picture also denotes me having come away on the day of picking up the car and now fueling the tank up - I had enough in the tank to get to the petrol station. Good job to because I went the wrong way around the M25 to come home - any excuse to drive the Porsche.

The rear view of the Porsche - me driving on the day going home after the fuel stop - my ever reliable Wife taking the pictures.

Finally home in one piece, looking like a brand new car

A few months later and having just arrived for the then Porsche Club GB yearly meet which that year was at Blenheim Palace near Oxford - my Wife this time did not take the photo she was seated beside me. There was a photographer taking the pictures as you enterered the grounds of the estate and then it was up to you if wanted to purchase the picture later on.

A cutaway diagram of the Porsche 911/964 that is in the service manual of the book - yes I have the original as well as the sellers booklet of the car.
I have had the car for over two years where upon I found numerous problems that did not materilise until the car was used alot more substantially than the last owner (10,000 over six years) I did around 5,000 in my first year. My 1st service I gringed at the price but what does one do especially within two months after that it was back at the garage with an oil leak that required everything at the rear of the car, to be taken out, which you may not believe was a stroke of luck because I had been a bit worried about the clutch which, upon the mechanic checking was down on it's rivats so to speak,so a new clutch at the same time!! Unfortunately or fortunately which ever you look at it, the clutch made a noise so come the following year for it's service (Another arm and a leg job price wise) they took it out and replaced it free of charge which ment I didn't have to ask for an oil change? Being that much an older car one realized that the odd rust has to been done, and subsequently finding out that the nearside front wing had been replaced. Does all this worry me what I have reported - no - simply because you are buying a historical sports car, a car at the time in 1993 would have cost you £ 60,000. You are paying the dues to keep it on the road and unless you have the facilities and the knowledge to actually do it yourself you pay the piper. However the plus side the buzz you get from the roaring engine noise (Forget about a radio) behind and seeing the spoiler coming out as you get on to the motorway and put your foot down beats a hell of a lot of things in life - that is if you are a bit of a petrolhead and want to live your life and not just dream it!!.This report December 2011.
